Earlier this year, in honor of the legacy of Orville Luster, the Luster Foundation made contributions to three Bay Area organizations committed to equity and community empowerment:
Mission Hiring Hall (MHH)
A long-standing, mission-driven workforce development nonprofit that has expanded economic opportunity for San Francisco residents for more than 50 years. Founded in 1971 as a grassroots effort for equity in the Mission District, MHH has grown into one of the city’s anchor organizations for connecting marginalized communities to sustainable careers—particularly in the construction sector.
Our mission is to prepare, place, and support job seekers who face systemic barriers to employment, including justice-involved individuals, opportunity youth, immigrants, and people experiencing housing instability. As the longstanding coordinator of the construction sector for the Office of Economic and Workforce Development’s CityBuild Academy and the Construction Administration and Professional Services Academy (CAPSA), MHH delivers nationally recognized pre-apprenticeship, apprenticeship placement, and career navigation services that launch residents into union trades and professional pathways.

Booker T. Washington Community Service Center (BTWCSC)
One of the Bay Area's oldest Black-led, Black-serving nonprofit organizations, with over 106 years of service to San Francisco. A beacon of Black joy and self-determination, we have nurtured over five generations of San Franciscans. We stand embedded as an anchor institution, fostering intergenerational bonds and working in solidarity with allied communities to reform and reimagine a more inclusive San Francisco. We prioritize serving the Black community and welcome all people from ages 0-99 who walk through our door. We are one of the few urban spaces where anyone in the community can access comprehensive services, from a hot meal to childcare to academic support to senior services.

Marin City Community Development Corporation (Marin CDC)
A nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing economic opportunity, social equity, and community well-being throughout Marin County. Through workforce development, financial education, mental health services, and community-based programs, Marin CDC empowers individuals and families to achieve greater stability, self-sufficiency, and long-term success. For more than four decades, the organization has worked to strengthen underserved communities by providing resources, support, and pathways to opportunity.
